The Devotion was started in 1675 by a French nun St. Margaret Mary Alacoque of the congregation of the Visitation Sisters. Jesus appeared to her more than seventy times from the year 1671 to 1675, holding on His palm His most Sacred Heart burning with love for the man but greivously wounded by the sin of humanity. In the apparitions, Jesus desired that man surrenders their Human hearts in exchange of His Divine Heart.
The Devotion came to Kenya through M/s Sheila Biggs from Goa in 1965 and in 1965 the office of the Sacred Heart was started and was hosted at St. Peters Claver's Nairobi. The same year the enthronment of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was done in Nairobi during the Solemnity of Christ The King under the leadership of Bishop John Njenga and from 1966 to 1985 he was the Patron of the Devotion.
In 1986 under the leadership of Bishop Nicodemus Kirima the Devotion spread to 9 dioceses that is: Nairobi, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisumu, Machakos and Kitale.
From December 2023, Rev. Fr. James Mukui took over the Chaplainancy of the devotion in the Archdiocese of Nairobi and he is the Chaplain to date.
O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore You, I love You, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer You this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure, and wholly obedient to Your will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in You and for You. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
